Wicomico County Partners, Parents, Guardians,
SARS-CoV-19 has certainly highlighted the vulnerability of our communities when faced with a catastrophic national emergency. One of the unintended consequences of COVID has been the tremendous increase in evictions and unemployment. Financially secure people are better able to survive down economies. The Vulnerable Populations Housing Sub Committee for Financial Literacy are advocating for Financial Literacy to be taught through the grades K-12 and be required for graduation. It is clear that basics of personal financial planning-teaching young people about money, its value, how to save, invest and spend, and how not to waste it-should be taught in school as early as elementary school. Regardless of when a young person's formal education ends, they will be thrust into situations where they need to know how to manage daily living expenses. So, school seems like the best and most logical place to deliver personal finance education to our children.
The next Wicomico County Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at 101 Long Avenue in Salisbury.
